Case Studies Of Performance Synchrony Watch

We’re here to bring about a generational leap forward in Alertness / Readiness Evaluation for you, your crew, and your colleagues.

The older tools currently in widespread use are based on simple reflex, response time tests, or subjective questionnaires. From these results, extraordinarily complicated results are obtained that have obvious or irrelevant correlations with real-world performance. The Sleep efficacy Cognitively Useful Readiness Evaluation (SECURE) tool is based on a dual task, attention switching task well-known for many decades in human performance testing called the Manikin test. These results are more like complex human-human, human-machine interactions and are exceptionally fatigue sensitive. A biomathematical model (SECURE) was created by fitting equations to these results after 72 hours of sleep deprivation and nap interventions.

There are many governments and commercial interests that must have a fatigue monitoring system in place because many lives and dollars are at stake if their operators are impaired by sleep deprivation. A sub-industry grew out of this need and for the last 30 years has been dominated by 2- 3 companies to provide that service. These have little to do with assessing sleep, little to do with complex human cognitive ability, and have only gotten more complicated to use and understand, more time-consuming with expensive and unproven results in the real world.

The SECURE model predicts sleep-deprived readiness degradation in a pilot’s fatal crash based on NTSB's 72-hour sleep history

This pilot crashed the plane on take-off and killed 5 passengers. Evaluating the 72-hour sleep history provided by the NTSB, the pilot was in the danger zone 18 hours before the crash. Simple to understand. The implications are clear and real. This is fatigue management for the 21st century. If the pilot had been wearing the watch, they might not have taken off. Real-time fatigue management.

Secue Readiness Score Pic Estimate

The SECURE model predicts the readiness of pilots based on watch data during several long-duration flights

The average SECURE score for commercial airline pilots showed that they took excellent safety precautions during their transmeridian, oceanic flights. The confidence intervals were well below the danger line. The company saved many $millions since these data were compelling enough to show the airlines did not need a dedicated crew rest facility on the aircraft.

SECURE Scores over Days

SECURE model predicts the readiness of college students based on watch data during finals week. The SECURE score correlates very well with Subjective fatigue scores.

Several students wore the Readiness watch during finals week for 5 days. On the left is a representative plot of one student. The student did not do as well on exams on days 2 and 3 as on days 4 and 5. On the right is a graph of the subjective fatigue log kept by the student during the 5 days, showing the correlation with the SECURE predictions of fatigue.

Measure Your Sleep Quality

At last, by combining the biomathematical model that predicts readiness with a watch app that measures sleep quality, we know in real-time how ready the wearer is for hours ahead.

The SECURE model is programmed into the watch application so that the user and the safety supervisor can see at a glance the readiness level of the wearer, now and for hours ahead, depending on the next sleep quality.

The teal dot on the ring shows the current time, and the readiness estimate goes out to 24 hours. The danger zone is predicted from the work of many human performance experts who have shown that 20 hours of sleep deprivation is approximately the readiness level of someone who is determined to be legally intoxicated. The watch shows that about 4 hours before the end of the 24 hours cycle shown would be in the danger zone. Keep in mind that this depends on the quality of the previous periods of sleep. The danger zone could be earlier or later, depending on how much cumulative fatigue has been built up.
